Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System Now Available in the USA and Canada
Porsche is responding to the growing demand for a built-in
navigation device for vintage Porsche sports cars with its
Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System. Following its
successful market launch in Europe in February 2015, the
Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System is now available in
the USA and Canada.
This purpose-built unit combines a style reminiscent of the
original equipment radios in these cars with the benefits of
modern digital technology. It fits perfectly into the DIN-1 slot
used for decades in Porsche sports cars and is operated by
means of two knobs, six discreetly integrated buttons, and a
touch-sensitive 3.5-inch display. The new Classic Radio
Navigation System also comes prewired with a lead for an
optional SiriusXM® satellite radio tuner.
With its black surface and two authentic styles of knobs (both
supplied as standard), the Classic Radio Navigation System
blends harmoniously into the dashboard of classic Porsche
models. It bears the Porsche logotype and is suitable for
sports car generations between the first 911 from the 1960s to
the last air-cooled 911 (993 series, MY1998), as well as the
912, 914, 924, 928, 944, and 968 models.
The Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System comes with
key features of today’s systems. In addition to smartphone
connection via Bluetooth, the unit has low-interference radio
reception, precise navigation, two USB ports, and interfaces
for a variety of external music sources, controllable from the
display. In addition, the Classic radio has an internal
microphone and an external microphone. The integrated
amplifier delivers 4×45 watts and can be connected either
directly to the loudspeakers or to the original sound system
using an optional adapter cable.
Exclusively developed and adapted for classic Porsche sports
cars
The Porsche Classic Radio Navigation System has been
exclusively developed for Porsche Classic sports cars. Radio
reception, for instance, has been optimized for the built-in
antenna supplied during original production (which is generally
only a single telescoping rod).
The device’s operating concept is based on Porsche
Communication Management (PCM). It has undergone
extensive testing at the Technical University in Munich to
verify user friendliness, and numerous trial trips were made in
the USA and Canada to test country-specific navigation.
Drivers have a choice of arrows and two-dimensional or threedimensional
maps to display the route, and the maps are
stored on a microSD card with eight gigabytes of memory.
The new Classic Radio Navigation System is available
immediately from authorized Porsche dealers.
The Porsche Classic division of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is
responsible for supplying parts for vehicles generally
produced more than ten years ago. Its services cover all
aspects of technical literature as well as the supply and
reproduction of original parts, and even extend to complete
restoration. The company is expanding its international dealer
and service network to around 100 Porsche Classic Partners
for optimal support of classic cars. Customers can expect a
wide range of Porsche Classic services from Porsche Classic
Partners. Through this measure, Porsche has integrated the
care of modern classic and vintage cars in an innovative
service concept, closely linking Porsche tradition and Porsche
innovation.

Wright On Target. Porsche Customers Sweep Canadian Tire Motorsports Park PWC
Wright Motorsports has been a Porsche customer team for
many years with entries in Pirelli World Challenge, Porsche
GT3 Cup Challenge USA by Yokohama and more. However,
never has the Ohio-based team been more impressive than at
the Pirelli World Challenge Victoria Day Speedfest at
Canadian Tire Motorsports Park (CTMP) May 20-22.
The only hiccup for the two-car team owned by John Wright
(Batavia, Ohio) was in the first session when a faulty timing
transmitter cost the team a practice time. From there,
everything went to plan as Patrick Long (Manhattan Beach,
California) captured the GT class pole position in his first race
driving the No. 58 Porsche Consulting Porsche 911 GT3 R.
His new teammate but longtime friend, Michael Schein (Glen
Cove, New York) did likewise in the GT Amateur (GTA) class
piloting the No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R.
Saturday’s Race, the first of the two-race weekend, saw Long
lead from “green-to-checkered flag.” The caution-free race
was a strong statement that his switch from EFFORT Racing,
who he opened the season with, to Wright, would not hamper
his championship aspirations. The Californian is chasing his
second World Challenge Driver Championship having taken
his first in 2011. Schein would also lead start-to-finish
sweeping the two classes the 911 GT3 R is eligible for, GT
and GTA.
Sunday’s Race 2 – Round Nine of the 20-race Pirelli World
Challenge schedule – started with threatening weather and
Long and Schein on their respective class pole positions,
thanks to setting respective fastest race laps in the first race
on Saturday. CTMP’s daunting Turn 3 was wet causing series
officials to call for a yellow flag start. Once the 50-minute race
went green, Long charged away from the field and, despite a
mêlée behind him that would lead to a lengthy caution period,
the longtime Porsche works driver maintained the top spot for
the second straight day, as did Schein.
In total, Wright Motorsports scored four class wins, four fastest
race laps and led every lap in the both race classes.
For Schein, the GTA victory on Saturday was his first in the
Pirelli World Challenge. To date, the New Yorker has made
six series starts with two wins, a second-place (Barber
Motorsports Park) and two third-place finishes (Circuit of the
Americas and Race 2 at Barber). Long has been a driving
coach to Schein throughout his career but having North
America’s only Porsche factory driver under the Wright
banner brought clear and immediate benefits.
New for the weekend was the introduction of twin SprintX
races. These 60-minute races echo pieces of endurance
racing with the same classes – and many of the same cars –
as in the regular Pirelli World Challenge events. However,
teams race with two drivers per entry versus the single-driver
format of the standard events. This standalone championship
also features mandatory driver and tire changes. Porsche was
represented by a single entry in the GT class with the No. 14
GMG Porsche 911 GT3 R. The blue-and-white rear-engine
entry was piloted by veteran Colin Braun (Stanley, North
Carolina) and amateur Brent Holden (Newport Beach,
California) to good showing in Saturday’s Race 1 finishing
with a podium, third. In Sunday’s morning’s Race 2, Braun
took the early lead holding it until the mandatory 90-second pit
stop came nearing the close of the pit window at 35-minutes.
Holden took over and held the lead until he was passed on the
main straight. He would cross the finish line in second-place
capturing the team’s second-straight podium.
