Porsche starts web TV format “9:11 Magazine”
Nine minutes and eleven seconds of technology, lifestyle and
sports: Porsche is expanding its online communication with
the new web TV format “9:11 Magazine”. At
911-magazine.porsche.com, the sports car manufacturer
presents entertaining and useful information about everything
relating to Porsche, ranging from company history to the
presentation of new cars. The web TV format supplements the
Porsche customer magazine “Christophorus” and will also be
published five times a year in German and English. The “9:11
Magazine” also offers a special service to online editors: They
can use complete episodes, individual segments, additional
footage material and pictures for journalistic purposes.
“The 9:11 Magazine sparks emotions, ably explains technical
and technological developments and provides interesting
insights into the past, present and future of Porsche. People
are at the heart of the magazine. They tell stories that are
supposed to reach and be remembered by the viewers,” says
Josef Arweck, Vice President Communications of Porsche
AG.
Take Walter Röhrl as an example: In the first magazine
episode with the motto “Courage,” the two-time rally world
champion and best racing driver of his day describes the
legendary night of Arganil – and how as a newcomer, he
outclassed the entire world elite. A different segment deals
with the 911’s most courageous colors. “Courage to take time
off” depicts the journey through the spectacular Scottish
countryside in the Porsche Panamera. “Pure,” the second
episode of the TV-magazine, will be dedicated to the iconic
sports car 911.
The “9:11 Magazine” is another building block in digital
information provided by Porsche Communications via The
Porsche Newsroom (newsroom.porsche.com) – a corporate
blog, online magazine and social media hub in one. Current
updates can be found on Twitter in real time: The account
@PorscheNewsroom provides information on all topics
relating to Porsche and currently has about 436,000 followers;
@PorscheRaces is the Twitter channel for all GT motor sport
activities; @Porsche_Team reports on Porsche’s LMP1
team’s test drives and races. Porsche also has its own
channel on “Drivetribe,” the online community of the former
Top Gear makers Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard
Hammond. The Instagram account @porsche_newsroom
supplements the provided information with exclusive photos.

Porsche vehicles old and new pass the test
Every new Porsche is developed with intensive testing, but
such testing is nothing new at Porsche. A new video takes a
look at the elaborate testing facility Porsche has developed in
Weissach, Germany.
“Porsche Top 5 – Weissach’s toughest functionality tests”
starts with a look at one of the oldest testing facilities at
Weissach, the skid pad. Built in 1966, the big circular paved
area is used especially for testing sports car handling. Lateral
acceleration is measured with G force. Rapid turning
maneuvers and skidding on wet or icy surfaces are also
tested.
The test track is the core element of testing at Weissach. It
includes a section of simulated potholes test how car
suspensions handle the pounding at 40 kph (25 mph). At
about 30 kph (19 mph), cars drive through a salt water tank so
engineers can examine the corrosion resistance of the lower
parts of the sports car. This also is a longstanding test in use
for decades at Weissach. A jump test subjects axles to
tremendous pressure so Porsche can develop the most stable
and reliable drive systems.
Off the track, another test is the wind tunnel, which can
subject cars to air speeds of up to 300 kph (186 mph), a
speed at which some airplanes can take off. But Porsche
wants to keep its cars firmly hugging the road, so
sophisticated wings and spoilers can be developed to produce
the right down force. The new aero-acoustic wind tunnel
opened in 2015 at Weissach allows Porsche engineers to
measure force changes of about one Newton.
With Porsche Cayenne and Macan models rising in popularity,
Porsche has an entire offroad track for testing. It features all
manner of rugged terrain, including a fording basin, rocky hills,
mud, inclined surfaces and more. The track helped develop
successful Porsche rally cars like the 959 that won the iconic
Paris-Dakar desert race.
While most Porsche enthusiasts would never want to
purposely crash their car, Porsche engineers have been
intentionally demolishing cars at Weissach for decades. But in
order to ensure safe models, they have to do it. Since the
1980s they have used a gravity rail system to push cars, roll
them over, hit them from the side and skid them. Before that
system was developed, the cars used to be dropped from a
crane to crash test them.
